We all want to control our characters. There’s no doubt about it. Trust me, I know how that feels. However, that’s what I’m going to talk to you about today. We can’t control our characters. No matter how much we want to.

This may not be true for everyone. If it’s not, feel free to disregard this post. For a lot of people I know, though, this is very true. Not everyone can control their characters. I know I can’t. My characters have a mind of their own. Do you ever have this happen to you?

It happens a lot. It’s frustrating, believe me. I know a lot of authors drink for this very reason, but what about those authors that don’t drink? (Or am I the only one?) I don’t drink, mostly because of being raised in a very anti-drinking home, and being underage. So what do I do when I get mad at my characters for not letting me control them? I hit things. I throw things. I basically just throw a big fit like a little kid that’s not getting their way.

Throwing the fit is very effective, and helps release a lot of energy. I find that I have a clearer mind, and can reason with the character better (I have full conversations with my characters. I know I sound crazy.). I can usually move on with my life and plot once I have that clear mind.

So what do you do when you don’t get to control you characters? Feel free to let me know. Keep the faith, writers. I believe in you all.
